Resolution Of Vector

When a vector is resolved, its component vectors produce together the same effect as the original vector does alone. We can resolve a vector into any number of component vectors, or we can resolve it along two arbitrary directions. But most often we resolve a vector along two mutually perpendicular directions, say along x- and y-axes. What are the techniques of resolution? What are the component vectors?
